Plan

My plan is to establish a regenerative farming operation that revitalizes degraded land and soil, transforming it into a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem. I aim to implement practices such as rotational grazing, cover cropping, and integrated livestock management to rebuild soil health, improve water retention, and enhance the land's productivity over time.

I’m particularly inspired by the opportunity to steward land in a way that prioritizes environmental sustainability, produces high-quality, nutrient-dense food, and fosters a connection with the surrounding community. My experience includes volunteering at Purifying Pastures, where I learned how to raise pigs on pasture and manage rotational grazing systems.

I am seeking a farm property that includes degraded or underutilized land with the potential for regeneration, while the land doesn’t have to be degraded I would need approximately 3-5 acres to start. Access to farmer housing for my wife, daughter, and I would be ideal, though proximity to a rental property could also work. A supportive environment that allows for the long-term care and improvement of the land is essential.

I’m committed to building a sustainable, productive farm that benefits both the landowner and the surrounding community, and I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate on this shared vision.

Description of Desired Transitional Agreement

I am seeking a transitional arrangement that allows for a collaborative partnership focused on regenerating and improving the health of the land. Ideally, this would include:

  1. Access to Land: A property with degraded or underutilized soil that I can restore using regenerative farming techniques such as rotational grazing, cover cropping, and diverse planting systems.
  2. Housing: On-farm housing for my wife, daughter, and I would be highly desirable, though proximity to a nearby rental property is also an option.
  3. Timeline and Support: A clear, mutually beneficial timeline to establish and implement farming operations, with the flexibility to build a sustainable, productive system over time.
  4. Shared Goals: A relationship with a landowner who shares my vision for environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture, where the focus is on improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, and creating a thriving, productive farm.

This arrangement would allow me to focus on regenerating the land while building a sustainable farm operation that benefits both the landowner and the broader community.

Additional Information on Produce or Livestock Needs

My primary goal is to start with pigs, using rotational grazing to restore soil health and build a strong foundation for the land. Pigs are ideal for this initial phase because they can help break up compacted soil, incorporate organic matter, and kickstart the regeneration process.

As the land recovers and productivity increases, I plan to scale gradually by integrating additional livestock species into a complementary grazing system, such as:

  • Poultry: Chickens or turkeys to follow pigs, providing pest control, spreading manure, and further enhancing soil fertility.
  •  Ruminants: Sheep goats pr cattle to manage vegetation and improve plant diversity while contributing additional organic matter to the soil.

This phased approach allows for organic growth without overburdening the land or resources. Each species will play a unique role in creating a balanced ecosystem while building a resilient, sustainable farming operation. Over time, the integration of multiple livestock species will maximize land use efficiency, improve biodiversity, and provide diverse revenue streams.

Preferred Equipment and Infrastructure

  • Farmer Housing
  • Barn / Storage
  • Fencing
  • Well / Pond / Other Water Source
  • Cold Storage (Cooler/Freezer)

Equipment and Infrastructure Details

To support our regenerative farming plan, our approach to equipment and infrastructure needs emphasizes:

  1. Mobility: We prioritize flexible, portable solutions that allow us to adapt swiftly to the evolving needs of the land and farm operations. Movable fencing, portable water systems, and temporary animal shelters ensure we can implement rotational grazing and other practices efficiently without relying on permanent structures.
  2. Modularity: Our strategy focuses on starting small and scaling operations in real-time, allowing for organic growth without incurring debt. This includes lightweight, adaptable equipment and infrastructure that can be expanded as the farm develops.
  3. Management Intensity: We embrace a people-centered approach, emphasizing hands-on management over reliance on pharmaceuticals, energy-heavy systems, or costly capital investments. This ensures a sustainable, resilient farming operation that prioritizes soil health, animal welfare, and ecological balance.

These principles align with our commitment to building a regenerative farming system that remains adaptable, scalable, and sustainable for the long term.

Additional Info on Experience/Education

In addition to my hands-on experience at Purifying Pastures, where I learned pasture management and sustainable livestock care, I’ve extensively studied regenerative farming principles and practices. This includes soil health restoration, holistic grazing techniques, and fostering biodiversity on agricultural land.

I’ve also been deeply influenced by Wendell Berry’s philosophy on land stewardship, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of farming, community, and ecology. My approach combines practical skills with a commitment to restoring degraded land and creating systems that are both ecologically and economically resilient.

Through these experiences, I’ve gained valuable insight into working with the land and its natural rhythms, making me well-equipped to take on the challenge of regenerating and maintaining farmland for long-term productivity and sustainability.
