Plan
Mother of three, third-year home gardener, and wife to a small business owner ready to leave the suburbs for real self-sufficiency. I’m passionate about teaching Black and minority families to grow their own food and tackle food insecurity in lower-income communities. I’m not looking to take over a property right away — I’d love to find a retiring landowner willing to mentor me and pass on their knowledge as I grow into a farm that can serve others too.
Desired Transitional Agreement
Description of Desired Transitional Agreement
I envision a gradual, relationship-based transition rather than an immediate purchase or takeover. Ideally, this would look like:
• Getting to know each other first. Before any formal agreement, I’d love to spend time on the property, learning the land, the systems already in place, and the story behind the farm.
• A working apprenticeship period. In the early stage, my family would work alongside the landowner — learning their methods, routines, and the specific knowledge that comes with knowing that land for years or decades. This could be a set number of months or a year or two, depending on what feels right.
• Gradual increase in responsibility. Over time, we’d take on more of the day-to-day operations, with the landowner shifting into a mentor/advisor role rather than being the primary hands-on worker.
• A clear, flexible timeline toward transfer. Whether that’s a lease-to-own arrangement, a phased sale, a life estate (where the owner retains rights to live on the property), or another structure — I’m open to whatever legal and financial framework works best for both parties, developed with proper legal guidance.
• Continued connection, even after transition. I’d love for the original owner to remain part of the farm’s story if they want — visiting, advising, seeing their life’s work continue — rather than a clean break.
• Fair and transparent terms for everyone. I want any agreement to protect both sides: the landowner’s financial security and legacy, and our ability to build toward true ownership and stability for my family.
