Plan

Greetings! I’m a beginner gardener ready to take the next step and start a small 2-5 acre farm in Georgia. I’m looking for land available via lease-to-own or through a loan. I’ve already gotten a head start on my orchard by sprouting 14 avocado trees, a lemon, a cherry, and an apple tree! They are temporarily hanging out in Florida while I find the perfect Georgia location to permanently plant them.

Description of Desired Transitional Agreement

I am looking for a lease to own agreement or a long-term lease with the option to purchase using an agricultural loan. Ideally, I would like to start with a 1 - 2 year trial lease to establish my start-up garden and fruit orchard, with a structured transition toward full ownership over the following 3 - 5 years. I am highly flexible and open to discussing timelines and arrangements that align with the landowner's long-term goals for the property.

Additional Information on Produce or Livestock Needs

My primary goal is to establish a small-scale start-up garden and fruit orchard. I am focusing on transplanting my 17 established starter fruit trees (including avocado, lemon, cherry, and apple), alongside a mix of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and seasonal Christmas trees. I also plan to integrate a small poultry flock for natural pest control, soil fertilization, and fresh eggs.

Additionally, I am deeply interested in adding bees to the farm in the future for honey production and essential orchard pollination. Because I am a beginner, I want to seek out proper training and mentorship, such as volunteering on an established apiary before introducing hives to the property.

My overall vision is to create a diverse, sustainable ecosystem where the livestock and crops naturally support one another.

Preferred Equipment and Infrastructure

  • Fencing
  • Well / Pond / Other Water Source
  • Greenhouse
  • Irrigation Equipment
  • Cold Storage (Cooler/Freezer)
  • Access to Electricity

Equipment and Infrastructure Details

As a beginner farmer establishing a start-up fruit orchard and garden, reliable water infrastructure and climate control are my highest priorities.

Because I am transitioning several young fruit trees (including avocados and citrus) from a warmer climate, a greenhouse and cold storage are essential for overwintering frost-sensitive plants and protecting early crops. I will require a dependable water source (well or pond) with working irrigation to establish healthy root systems for my newly transplanted trees. Fencing is also critical to protect the young orchard from heavy local deer pressure.

While I am highly flexible and willing to bring or build temporary infrastructure over time, having access to electricity and foundational water systems on day one is vital for the farm's initial success.

Additional Info on Experience/Education

I am actively gaining hands-on agricultural experience by volunteering on a family member's farm. In tandem with this practical field work, I am conducting rigorous research and leveraging the Cornell Garden-Based Learning program to deepen my knowledge of soil science and crop management.
